Ras al Hadd – shallow lagoon at Sur
The small lagoon of around 1 square kilometer at the north-eastern cape of Oman is a good flat water spot at medium and high tides in shallow water. At low tide the lagoon remains empty. Different wind conditions prevail here, as both wind systems – the Indian Ocean as well as the Arabian Sea – are influencing the lagoon. In summer, temperatures can reach up to 54 degrees if the heated southern wind is blowing from the desert.
Wave Spot Aseelah (Al Ashkarah)
The most famous wave spot on the mainland is situated 12km north of Aseelah near Al Ashkarah. The spot offers a nice and clean wave. During summer (June to August), strong wind of 25-45 knots from the south cause big waves and blows side shore from the right. This spot is only for really advanced riders. A violent beach break and several reefs on the downwind side can be really dangerous for beginners and intermediates. In winter, lighter wind comes from the north with a weak wave – good for classic surfing. Aseelah is not really a destination for a kite holiday, but the spot can shorten the way back to Muscat along the east coast of the mainland. The spot earned its reputation in the times when better spots in the south where still difficult to reach due to the lack of roads in those times.
